Pregnant woman struggles to access healthcare in quarantine centre, unborn child dies in Bihar’s Nalanda

In Nalanda district, Bihar, pregnant Priya Singh arrived from Uttar Pradesh, who was quarantined at Nalanda Vidya Mandir quarantine centre struggled to get a healthcare facility which resulted in the death of his unborn child.

Pregnant women in India, be it from the rural or urban regions, are severely facing the brunt of the coronavirus-induced lockdown. There have been many cases where pregnant migrant women delivered on the road without any medical facilities. While few women deliveries went successful, there are cases where women and the child died due to a lack of healthcare.

A similar incident is reported from Nalanda district, Bihar. Pregnant Priya Singh arrived from Uttar Pradesh, who was quarantined at Nalanda Vidya Mandir quarantine centre struggled to get a healthcare facility which resulted in the death of his unborn child. The woman was seeking for healthcare from 4 days.

Shilpa Kumari, who is an acquaintance and studied in Hyderabad with the woman said, “They were quarantined four days ago at Nalanda Vidya Mandir quarantine centre. Priya had labour pain and started bleeding the same night. They asked the administration for help, but were unheard of. She was later, taken to a private hospital.”

After the ultrasound, the reports brought out the death of her unborn child.

As per civil surgeon Ram Singh, “The woman had not given any information about her health earlier. If any information was given, she would have been admitted to Sadar Hospital as soon as possible.”
