Punjab: Alert sounded in state after Mohinder Pal Singh, key accused in Bargari sacrilege case killed in Patiala jail

Mohinder Pal Singh Bittoo was attacked by two inmates at the Nabha jail at around 5 pm. He was taken to a hospital in a serious condition where he was declared brought dead.

Bargari sacrilege case prime accused was reportedly killed in Patiala’s Nabha jail on Saturday. The accused, Mohinderpal Bittu who was a follower of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect was killed in by two Sikh inmates of the Nabha maximum security jail where he had been imprisoned.

Mohinder Pal Singh Bittoo was attacked by two inmates at the Nabha jail at around 5 pm. He was taken to a hospital in a serious condition where he was declared brought dead.

Initial investigations have revealed that 48-year-old Bittoo, a resident of Faridkot, was attacked by Gursewak Singh and Maninder Singh, who were in jail in a murder case.

Mohinder Pal Singh Bittoo was the member of a 45-member community of the Dera Sache Sauda and also one of the 150 Dera followers who were booked by the Panchkula Police for violence after the conviction of the Dera head, Gurmeet Ram Rahim.

Punjab’s Chief Minister Office released a statement saying that CM Captain Amarinder Singh has ordered an inquiry into the fatal assault on Mohinder Singh and warned the perpetrators of stringent punishment. The CM has also ordered beefing up of security in the state in the wake of the attack, confirmed the CMO.

In October 2015, at least 110 torn Angs (parts) of the holy Guru Granth Sahib were found in Bargari area of Faridkot district. The incident led to violent protests by the Sikh community and killing of two people by police as violent protesters were brandishing swords in the air and setting up a police vehicle on fire. The incident drew strong condemnation from Sikh diaspora in the US, United Kingdom and Canada.
