Allow small industry to operate from non-containment zones: Punjab CM

Chandigarh: As the elections of urban local bodies are nearing, Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh on Tuesday announced ‘people-friendly’ bylaws by amending the Municipal Building Bylaws 2018. It would be a second such exercise since 2017 when the Congress government gained power in the state.

The amended by-laws had indicated the following provisions- parking norms have been relaxed and mixed land use has been allowed.

Local Government Minister Brahm Mohindra said “The aim was to ensure hassle-free and seamless construction activity, whether of residential or commercial and industrial buildings, including hotels and miniplex cinemas.”

Local Government officials said the main intent was to attract investment and that there were deficiencies in the 2018 bylaws introduced during the tenure of previous Local Government Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu.

While commercial establishments have been allowed more parking space with a higher floor area ratio, space in multiplexes can now be rented out to corporate offices and to set up small hotels. At the same time, industrial buildings have been allowed to have storage godowns.
