To determine the start date for the Islamic month of Rabi ul-Awwal, Muslims in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Indian Subcontinent will attempt to see the moon this evening.

The sighting of the moon will mark the beginning of Rabi ul-Awwal and also the confirmation of the date for the celebration of Prophet Mohammed’s birthday which is known as Eid-e-Mild or Eid Milad-un-Nabi or Mawlid.

A new month begins upon the sighting of a crescent moon on the 29th day of the ongoing month, as per the Islamic lunar calendar. If the moon is not sighted, the month completes 30 days and a new month begins the next day.

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Indian Subcontinent, its 29th of Safar month today. If the moon is sighted, Rabi ul-Awwal month will begin from October 30 and Muslims will celebrate Prophet Mohammed’s birthday on November 10 whereas if the crescent is not sighted and remains invisible then Safar month will complete 30 days and the new month will begin from October 31. Prophet Mohammed’s birthday would then be celebrated on November 11.

For the uninitiated, in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries, Muslims will celebrate Prophet Mohammed’s birthday on November 9 as Rabi ul-Awwal month began there from today.
