Rabindranath Tagore, the writer of Jana Gana Mana, the National Anthem of India, was born on May 7, 1861as Robindronath Thakur. In remembrance and reverence of the intellectual Rabindranath Tagore on his birthday, Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti or the Rabindra Jayanti is celebrated every year.

A poet, musician and artist, the Bengali polymath gave the world “Gitanjali”, a beautiful collection of sensitive Bengali poems which won him a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. While the talented Tagore wrote novels, essays, short stories, travelogues, dramas and songs, he is best known for his poetry.

Tagore develop an early love for literature, and had begun reading biographies, poems, history, Sanskrit and several others by the age of 12. He also studied the classical poetry of Kalidasa, the father of poetry in India. In 1877, he wrote his first poem which was composed in a Maithili style.

Rabindranath Tagore observed the life of the village very closely. He wanted to eliminate illiteracy and spread education in lives of farmers and tenants. He felt that for the development of the country, the development of poor farmers is necessary first. To make this dream come true, he planned to open a school for the education of the children of these farmers and tenants on the small land he owns in Santiniketan, about 150 km from Kolkata.

Tagore wrote eight novels and several poems and most of his creations are in the Bangla language. His most acclaimed works in the novel genre are Ghare Baire, Shesher Kobita, Char Odhay, Gora, Jogajog, and Dak Ghar. Aside from fiction and autobiographical works, he also wrote essays, lectures, and short stories on various topics ranging from history to science and arts.

As a prolific music, Tagore composed the words and music of the Indian national anthem Jana Gana Mana, which was accepted as the national anthem in 1950. His song has been accepted as the national anthem of Bangladesh as well, thus making him the first-ever person to have written the national anthems of two countries.

At the age of sixty, Tagore took up drawing and painting. Due to successful exhibitions of his many works, he made a debut appearance in Paris upon encouragement by artists he met in the south of France.

Facts about  Rabindranath Tagore:

  1. Tagore was often called the Bard of Bengal. It was believed that Tagore began to write poetry at the age of eight.
  2. He began to use his real name to publish the dramas and short stories in 1877.
  3. Tagore called for the independence of India from Britain since he was known as ardent anti-nationalist, Universalist internationalist and humanist.
  4. Tagore created various works of literature, music, and art in the forms of texts, doodles, sketches, painting, and songs.  The Visva-Bharati University established by Tagore houses his legacy.
  5. The work of Tagore inspired the national anthem of Sri Lanka.

Rabindranath Tagore died on August 7, 1941 in Kolkata due to prolonged illness.
