In a major setback to the Congress party in Rajasthan, Khinvsar MLA and Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) head Hanuman Beniwal has joined hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The saffron party will be leaving the Nagaur Lok Sabha seat for Beniwal, while it is anticipated that RLP could also get Barmer seat.

The development comes less than a week after Congress announced its candidates for Rajasthan Lok Sabha seats, including Nagaur in which the party gave ticket to Jyoti Mirdha.

Beniwal who was suspended from the BJP in 2013 after his remarks about the corruption of party politicians and their connections with Indian National Congress leaders, fought the 2013 Rajasthan Assembly elections as an Independent candidate and defeated his rival BJP candidate by more than 23,000 votes.

After successfully organising multiple “Kisan Hunkar Maha Rallies”, in 2018 he formed his own party, RLP. In the 2018 Rajasthan Assembly elections, the party went on to win three seats, including Khinvsar who was won by the party founder himself for the third time. The other two winners being Pukhraj Garg (Bhopalgarh) and Indira Devi (Merta).

In 2014, the saffron party, at the time of Modi wave, had won all 25 Lok Sabha seats in Rajasthan. The state will go for polls in the fourth and fifth phase of elections on April 29 and May 6.
