Rajasthan govt allows prisoners to celebrate birthdays with families, distribute sweets

To much relief to the prisoners in Rajasthan, the government has allowed convicts and under-trials in the state jail to celebrate their birthdays. To make it more special, the government has also given permission to the spouse, parents, and children below 28 years of age to join them to celebrate the occasion.

The Rajasthan government also allowed to distribute up to 2 kg sweets among their fellow inmates. But the permission to cut a cake is not given.

Rajasthan jail has 20K prisoners

DG, Prisons, Bhupendra Singh said that appropriate instructions have been issued to all jail superintendents and jailors. There are around 20,000 prisoners in the Ajmer high-security jail and nine central jails in the state alone. The total number of jails in the state is 96. Of them, around 5,000 are convicts while 15,000 are under-trials.

The government allowed and asked ward in-charges to greet the prisoners on their birthdays. Their family members joining the prisoners can bring new clothes for them, and they are permitted to wear new clothes on their birthdays.

The government has taken this step in order to make the prisoners feel better and believes that the move would improve the mental health of the prisoners. “It is a reformative step,” said a senior official.
