PM RAHAT Medical Care: The government has started the PM RAHAT (Road Accident Victim Hospitalisation and Assured Treatment) Scheme to help people injured in road accidents. It gives cashless medical care of up to Rs 1.5 lakh per victim.
The scheme is made to make sure accident victims get hospital treatment for seven days without worrying about money. This was the first decision after the Prime Minister moved into the new PM office building, ‘Seva Teerth’, showing a focus on citizens’ safety and fast medical care.

The Golden Hour
The “Golden Hour” is the first hour after an accident. Quick medical care in this hour can save many lives. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways says, “nearly 50 per cent of road accident deaths can be averted if victims are admitted to hospital within the first hour.” PM RAHAT makes sure victims can reach hospitals immediately without paying upfront. Anyone at the accident, including Good Samaritans or ‘Rah-Veer’, can call 112 to get the nearest hospital and ambulance.
What the Rs 1.5 Lakh Covers?
Under PM RAHAT, accident victims get cashless treatment up to Rs 1.5 lakh for seven days. Stabilisation care is clearly defined: up to 24 hours for minor injuries and 48 hours for life-threatening cases. Police verification is done through a digital system to keep the process transparent.
The system is connected to the technology platforms like the Electronic Detailed Accident Report (eDAR) and the Transaction Management System (TMS 2.0). This links things liek reporting, hospital admission, police verification treatment updates, and claim payments. Police confirmation must happen in 24 hours for minor cases and 48 hours for critical ones. Hospitals are reimbursed from the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVAF). For insured patients, insurance companies pay. For uninsured or hit-and-run cases, the government provides funds. The ministry said, “Claims approved by the State Health Agency will be paid within 10 days.”
