Nearly 1.8 lakh tonnes of food is wasted every day in India and around 20 crore people go hungry. In order to ensure no person goes to bed empty stomach and to reduce food wastage, Haji P Mohammad alias Haji Muttan came up with a unique initiative – Roti Bank.

The beginning was in the year 2015. It was decided that rotis would be collected–volunteers would go from house to house and collect them, in order to provide food–rotis and sabzi for the needy, so that no one went to bed hungry.

The roti banks’ volunteers goes to the doorstep of the poorest to turn the idea of “right to food” into a reality.

Managed by a group of around 240 youngsters and 94 elders, the “Roti Bank” gives home-cooked rotis and vegetables to the needy every day. As part of the initiative, two GPRS-equipped vans make rounds of streets near hospitals and slums to provide food to the needy people.

Later, inspired by Haji Muttan’s initiative, more Roti Banks were opened in the region and in other cities of Uttar Pradesh including Varanasi, Rampur, Gorakhpur, and then across India.
