Russian Language Day 2023: On June 6, UN Russian Language Day coincides with Aleksandr Pushkin’s birthday, a Russian poet widely regarded as the progenitor of modern Russian literature.
Russian is a Slavic language, with Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Rusyn (Ukraine and Slovenia) as its closest relatives. In the nineteenth century, what we now refer to as modern Russian was referred to as “Great Russian.” Ukrainian was referred to as “Little Russian,” while Belarusian was dubbed “White Russian.” Today, more than 170 million individuals speak Russian.
UNESCO was founded on this date in 2010.
