Saba Day in Saba 2023: Saba observes Saba Day, an official holiday, on the initial Friday of December each year. This day honors the national symbols of Saba, including its flag, national anthem, and coat of arms. Landing at a mere 5.0 square miles, it is the most compact island in the Netherlands Antilles. The island has retained its independence despite being under Dutch rule since 1816. Saba Day is widely commemorated on the island through a variety of contests, festivals, and award ceremonies that honor notable individuals from Saba. Let’s acquire a deeper understanding of what else follows!

Saba Day in Saba History

According to legend, Columbus observed Saba as one of the islands during his 1493 expedition. However, he abstained from approaching its shores due to the hazardous volcanic stony formations that surrounded them. Following a shipwreck in 1632, a crew of Englishmen arrived at the island over 1.5 centuries later. Historical records indicate that the Arawak Indians were already occupying Saba at the time.

A Frenchman at random claimed Saba for Louis XIII of France three years later. The Dutch West India Company seized possession of the region around 1640 by dispatching individuals from the adjacent island of St. Eustatius. However, this did not last for long. Sir Henry Morgan, a notorious English free seaman, expelled all Dutch settlers from St. Maarten in 1664.

Saba’s economy thrived during the 17th and 18th centuries on the proceeds of the production of sugar and rum; the region subsequently transitioned to the lobster fishery industry. It was unfortunate that England discarded ‘undesirable’ individuals on Saba, so the island quickly became an ideal refuge for pirates. Nevertheless, shortly thereafter, commerce and sailing were sanctioned, and the majority of Saba men embarked on maritime expeditions. Additionally, at this time, the women of the island’s craft known as Saba lace received widespread acclaim in Europe.

Saba was under British occupation during the entire Napoleonic period, and the Dutch were put to a difficult stalemate. The Dutch Regaining Possession of the Island did not occur until 1816. Saba has been a special municipality of the Dutch monarchy ever since that time.
