HISTORY OF SALLY RIDE DAY

Sally Ride Day was instituted in 2003 and has been observed annually since then. This day serves to remind women that they are capable of achieving anything they put their minds to. It disseminates more information about women’s role in science, thereby encouraging more young women to pursue their passions in the hard sciences. Dr. Ride inspires them to believe they are capable of achieving anything and shattering the glass ceiling. Having more women in space will enable us to attain greater scientific heights.

Dr. Ride was an astronaut who was born on May 26, 1951 in Los Angeles, California. She attended Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania before transferring to U.C.L.A. In 1973, Ride graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Physics from Stanford University. In 1975, she earned a master’s degree in Physics from Stanford. She earned a Ph.D. in Physics in 1978. Her research investigated the interaction between X-rays and the interstellar medium. Out of the 8,000 individuals who applied to the NASA astronaut training programme, only 35 were chosen. She was a member of NASA Astronaut Group 8, the first cohort of American astronauts to include women. Dr. Ride achieved space on the second flight of the Space Shuttle “Challenger” as the mission specialist aboard STS-7. The STS-7 was launched on June 18, 1983 from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.

Sally Ride was a teenager
