Sambhaji Bhosale was born on May 14, 1657. Sambhaji Maharaj, the second leader of the Maratha Kingdom, was born to Shivaji and Saibai.
He lost his mother at the age of 2 and was raised by Jijabai, who instilled in him the same values and strong spirits that Chraprapati Shivaji Maharaj boasted.
History and significance of Sambhaji Maharaj Jayanti
On this day of the year, Sambhaji Maharaj’s contribution to Maratha reign is celebrated. After Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s death, Sambhaji’s journey to the throne was also full of challenges, but he continued to rule for nine years.
His rule was largely influenced by the ongoing war between the Maratha Kingdom and the Mughal Empire and other neighbouring powers such as the Siddis, Mysore and the Portuguese in Goa.
Sambhaji Maharaj played a key role in shaping the Maratha Kingdom. However, he and his 25 advisers were captured by Muqarrab Khan’s Mughal forces in the Sangameshwar conflict in February 1689. Then, Sambhaji was tortured and executed by Aurangazeb.
After his early death, his brother Rajaram I succeeded to the Maratha Throne. Sambhaji is still one of the bravest rulers of the Maratha Empire and is respected and praised by many people.

Shivaji Bhosale aka Shivaji Maharaj aka Chhatrapati Shivaji; an aspect, an inspiration or rather a phase of Indian history- a chapter that remains open in the minds of Mumbaikars.
Maratha warrior-kings’s first wife, Saibai (Nimbalkar), it is said that he had four more- Soyarabai Mohite, Putalabai Palkar, Sakvarbai Gaikwad, and Kashibai Jadhav. However, certain websites like the lowdown and Indian Forums confirm that he had a total of eight wives- this included Sagunabai, Laxmibai, and Gunwantabai as well. While his first wife bore him Sambhaji and three daughters, Soyarabai bore him a son, Rajaram, and a daughter, Deepabai. His other children were Rajkunvarbai from Sagunabai and Kamlabai from Sakvarbai.
Saibai passed away owing to a prolonged illness in 1659 at a rather young age. According to the lowdown, Putalabai immolated herself as part of the ‘Sati’ ritual post Shivaji’s death in 1680, while another Queen (reports don’t confirm which one), died just before his coronation in 1674.
