Shavuot is a two-day Jewish festival with many traditions and recipes. It marks the all-important wheat harvest in Israel, and it commemorates the anniversary of the day when God gave the Torah to the nation of Israel assembled at Mount Sina.

In the 19th century, several Orthodox synagogues in Britain and Australia held confirmation ceremonies for 12-year-old girls on Shavuot, a precursor to the modern Bat Mitzvah.
