Join us as we celebrate this milestone occasion by exploring his life, achievements and impact on modern-day Bangladesh.”

The Life of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh, was born on March 17, 1920, in the village of Tungipara, in the district of Faridpur, which was then part of undivided Bengal province in British India. His father Sheikh Lutfar Rahman was a prosperous landlord and his mother Sayera Khatun a housewife.

After completing his early education in Tungipara, he went to Calcutta in 1929 to study at the Eden Mohila College. In 1940, he passed his Intermediate Examination from the Dhaka College and obtained a BA degree from the same college in 1943. The same year he enrolled at the University Law College but could not complete his studies due to political unrest.

In 1947, Mujib became General Secretary of the East Bengal Provincial Muslim League. He played an important role during Pakistan’s independence movement and was elected as a member of the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan in 1947.

The Legacy of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

Since his days as a student, Rahman has been interested in politics. Later, he rose to prominence within the Muslim League, which advocated for the establishment of a separate Islamic state from India.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman led the Awami League to victory in the general elections held in Pakistan in 1970. The party won with an overwhelming majority, but the West Pakistani regime refused to cede power.

This resulted in a power struggle that culminated in Rahman’s declaration of independence for Bangladesh on March 26, 1971, signaling the beginning of the War of Independence. However, he was shortly arrested by the Pakistan Army and placed in solitary confinement at Pakistan’s Mianwala jail until January 8, 1972, when Zulfikar Ali Bhutto released him in response to international pressure.

The detention of Rahman sparked the Liberation War. After nine months of bloodshed, the Pakistani occupation forces surrendered on December 16, 1971, and Bangladesh became a sovereign state.

Had Rahman and the majority of his family not been murdered on August 15, 1975, he would have turned 102 years old. Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, his daughters, avoided the massacre because they were abroad at the time.

The Significance of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Birthday

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birthday is celebrated on March 17 in Bangladesh.
