The Sharavan Month widely known as Sawan across India has arrived. This year the auspicious month started on July 6 and will end on August 19. The entire month is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Shravan is the fifth month of the Hindu calendar which is observed by Shiva devotees. The month is known for fasting an offering prayers, this month is considered highly auspicious. Any Shiva Mantra including Om Namah Shivay can be chanted during Sawan.

The most important part about Shravan is fasting Mondays. Monday fasting is purely dedicated to Shiva. The story attached to this is that following the Samudra Manthan several valuable gemstones emerged out of the sea. What also emerged was poison, which Shiva swallowed. To protect her husband, Parvati, his consort immediately held his neck to prevent the poison from entering his body. This resulted in Shiva’s throat turning blue (with the poison) and earning him the moniker, Neelkanth (The One with the Blue Throat). Devotees dedicate an entire month to Shiva and these fasts are observed strictly.

Tuesday’s fasting during Shravan month is known as Mangal Gauri Vrat. Sawan Shivaratri and Hariyali Amavasya are other auspicious days during Shravan month.

The devotees keep fast every Monday referred to as ‘Somwar Vrat’ and visit Lord Shiva temple early in the morning to offer milk or water to Shiva Lingam. Although, this year the pious month will be celebrated differently due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Sawan month is generally celebrated by Hindu women. While married women do ‘solah shringar’ and wear green clothes, unmarried girls keep fast to marry the man of her choice. Mehendi is a prime part of ‘solah shringar’. Married and umarried women apply heena or mehndi during Sawan Month.
