Valve has published a new Steam Community update. The notice requests that developers explicitly identify the controllers supported by a specific game. According to Steam, this new modification will make it easier for users to identify games based on their prefered controller.
Steam’s New Feature Reveals PlayStation Controller Support
Steam has created a new survey for game developers that requests an inventory of all supported controllers. Previously, Steam would only indicate whether a game supported full or partial controller support.
Users will now be able to see if a game supports Xbox controllers or DualSense and DualShock PlayStation controllers. Since this option will be readily accessible on the Steam Store, players will be able to make more informed purchase decisions.
According to Steam, the option to observe controller support will become available for all games beginning in October 2023. The company has requested that game developers prioritise controller support. Steam has also stated that it will not presume controller support, leaving game developers solely responsible for declaring controller support for each individual game.
Steam will also display the inventory of games that support controllers in the Steam Library. This modification will be reflected in the Steam Desktop Client. The platform will indicate whether a game in your library is compatible with Xbox or Sony controllers.
Steam’s online store also has a Controller Friendly section. Here, users can directly select games that by default support a game controller. Baldur’s Gate 3 and FIFA 23 are currently the most popular controller-supported titles on Steam with over 500,000 active users.
Steam Observed an Increase in Controller Users
In 2018, according to Steam, 11% of all users played games with a controller. In 2023, however, 27% of consumers will be controlled by controllers. Steam claims that controllers are more popular than ever, and the company values its consumers’ preferences.
Since 2017, more than 87 million Steam users have played games with a controller. According to the company, the majority of these users were playing with an Xbox controller, but 25% were using a Sony PlayStation controller.
Steam also provides game developers with APIs for integrating controller support. The company also offers a Steam Input Gamepad Emulation platform to assist game developers in implementing APIs for game controllers. To reach a larger audience, Steam has been encouraging developers to add controller support.
