Story of a Bengal’s e-rickshaw puller, an ardent follower of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

The Kachaipara area of Bagnan in Bengal’s Howrah district is known for a person who might be ordinary for everyone but is popular among the people of that area for a reason that may sound uncanny to most of us.

Kalo Mallick, a 50-year-old man from Kachaipara area is a hard-core worshiper of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose since his childhood and considers him as an idol.

Unlike other e-rickshaw’s, his e-rickshaw is decorated with pictures and messages of Subhas Chandra Bose which one rarely finds on a rickshaw. Not only he is famous for sporting these photos on his rickshaw but also he is found cleaning Bose’s statue near Bagnan railway station or where ever he finds one. He not only cleans the statue but also garlands it.

January 23 which is marked as the birthday of Subhas Chandra Bose is a special day for Mallick as he distributes fruits and blankets to the poor people on this occasion every year and also organizes a small program with the help of the local people.

He told a national daily Two years ago, I had to sell my pedal-rickshaw to buy blankets. My friends and local people lent me money to buy a used e-rickshaw. Since then some people help me observe this day.”

Watching his popularity and dedication, both the Trinamool Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) asked him to contest the panchayat elections last year on their ticket, but he politely refused.

Mallick never went to school and had to work as a labourer to earn a livelihood for himself and his family.

“I have known Netaji only by hearing what people say about him. Whatever I have learnt is enough to make me realise that he left for us a great ideology, something politicians lack today. I will follow Netaji’s message till my last day,” Mallick says.

In past, Mallick visited Netaji Bhavan, Bose’s residence, in 2015 and even met Krishna Bose, wife of Netaji’s nephew Sisir Bose.

Now Mallick who barely earns Rs 200 per day is saving money to visit Cuttack, Odisha where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was born.

His dedication towards Netaji has always left people in awe.
