Student moves HC against Karnataka Law University's decision to hold semester exams in October

Law students have filed PIL before the Karnataka High Court against the Karnataka State Law University’s decision to hold intermediate semester examinations starting in October 2020. The decision to conduct the examination is alleged to be violative of the UGC guidelines, mandating promotion of intermediate semester students based on the alternate evaluation scheme.

Third-year law student, Purbayan Chakraborty who has filed a petition, gives emphasis on mandating promotion of intermediate semester students in accordance with the alternate evaluation scheme.

As per reports, in a petition, it is mention that the intermediate semester students ought to be promoted under a comprehensive formula prescribed by the UGC, where 50% weightage will be in internal evaluation and 50% weightage would be in marks obtained in the previous semester.

Petition also reads that the decision to hold the exam will stress out students who failed to attend the online classes for various reasons such as bad internet connection, affordability, remote locality, etc. This will make such individuals overburden who are already marginalized.

The plea also states that due to the lockdown the academic calendar has been severely affected and that they will need a few months’ time to compensate for the loss for the online classes after re-opening the college to prepare for their semester examination.

On the other hand, the plea says that students who are asked to take a previous semester exam are unreasonable. However, it is not possible for a student to write an exam for a previous semester while studying in a different semester.
