Tabrez Ansari lynching case: Murder charges reimposed on accused after 8 days

The recent development in Tabrez Ansari lynching case suggest that the Jharkhand police has brought back the murder charge against 11 accused, eight days after it was dropped against them.

The police had, on September 10, dropped the murder charge against all the 13 accused in the case and converted it into one of culpable homicide not amounting to murder (section 304, IPC) on the basis of the post-mortem, medical and forensic reports, which said 24-year-old Ansari had died of cardiac arrest.

However, the police on Wednesday filed a supplementary chargesheet, bringing back the murder charge, based on a fresh medical report. On the basis of the new report, police came to the conclusion that the cardiac arrest was caused by the preceding violence inflicted with “hard and blunt object.”

The police also filed the chargesheet against the remaining two accused charging them with murder.

A welder, Ansari was accused of theft by a mob in Dhatkidih village of Sarikela-Kharsawan on June 18. He was tied to a pole and forced to chant “Jai Shri Ram, Jai Hanuman”. Police later arrested Ansari and booked him on theft charges while doctors at the Sadar Hospital declared him “fit for travel”.

Four days later, Ansari died while being rushed to hospital after he collapsed inside jail.
