Krishnagiri: ‘Eruthu vidum vizha’ a variant of jallikattu was organised on Sunday. A 28-year-old spectator got killed after a bull entered into the audience gallery and knocked him down.

As per the police, the deceased as G Chinnapayan Muniyappa, son of Govindappa, from a village near Dhenkanikottai.

20 bull tamers were injured, two bulls died as they rammed into each other during the event.

The festival was organized as part of the three-day annual festival at the Mallikarjuneswarar temple at Mallikarujunamalai.

The police stated, a large number of people from across the district, particularly from the villages surrounding Mallikarjunamalai, usually turn up for the annual temple festival.

On Sunday too, there was a huge crowd to watch the bull-taming sport. One of the bulls barged into the area where spectators had gathered as it ran out of the arena.

The police, however, stated, Chinnapayyan, who was caught unaware, couldn’t flee and was knocked down by the bull. He suffered grievous injuries and died on the spot.

The arena for ‘eruthu vidum vizha’ would be a bigger one, usually an agricultural field. Hence, the barricades were erected only for a portion, primarily around the starting point, where the bulls would be let loose, though there would be spectators all around the field.

Police though has stated that all precautionary measures were taken, yet the bulls managed to enter the gallery.
