Coronavirus Lockdown: Tamil Nadu cancels milk supplies from Kerala, dairy farmers to be affected

Amidst coronavirus lockdown that has been set up, Tamil Nadu has taken a stern decision of not buying milk from Kerala. The shops will remain closed these days, Milma has been exporting excess milk to Tamil Nadu for milk powder manufacturing.

Milma used to collect milk from all dairy farmers and export the extracted milk.

But, now Tamil Nadu in an issued circular stated that they will no longer collect milk from Kerala leaving Milma in a crisis.

At present, an average of 6.5 lakh litres of milk is collected from Malabar region on a daily basis.

Only 3 lakh litres could be sold and the rest of the amount is used for the manufacture of milk products. The excess milk was exported for manufacturing of milk powder.

In Kerala, there is only one milk powder manufacturing centre, it is located in Ernakulam where only less quantity of powder can be produced.

A total of 1 lakh dairy farmers in the Malabar region. The decision of Tamil Nadu may adversely affect these dairy farmers.

The issue has been brought to the attention of concerned officials in the government. If no resolution is made within Monday, severe regulations need to be made in milk collection from Wednesday, Milma Malabar Regional Chairman K. S. Mani told the media.
