Taxi driver harasses Air India woman pilot at Kerala Airport; accused arrested

A 30-year-old taxi driver accused of allegedly harassing a Delhi-based woman pilot was arrested on Saturday at the international airport in Kerala.

The incident took place when the woman pilot, who flies for Air India, arrived at Thiruvananthapuram and waited for her cab at a pre-paid taxi kiosk with CCTV cameras installed.

“I’m waiting for the transport, after work and this illiterate hooligan stops his car a few feet away from me and decides to catcall and harrass me, ‘Hey baby, come with me’ and speeds away in his car,” the pilot said in a social media post.

She reached out to authorities, including the local lawmaker Shashi Tharoor, but says that she failed to get a response. The pilot lodged a complaint with the airport manager and said that the car was a Kerala-registered grey Esteem. She also accessed the CCTV footage and found the car’s registration number.

The taxi driver has been arrested on charges of sexual harassment. However, his identity is yet to be ascertained. The case has been registered against the accused under Section 354A (making sexually coloured remarks) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Notably, the incident comes a day after the national carrier Air India celebrated Women’s Day by operating 12 international and more than 40 domestic flights with all-women crew. Around 240 female employees of the airline were involved in flying the flights.
