The Southern Railway General Manager has ordered an inquiry by a three-member committee into the derailment of two coaches (a luggage-cum-brake van and parcel van) of train no.12601 Chennai-Mangaluru Central Mail at Shoranur Junction at about six on Tuesday morning.

According to the reports, the incident happened near the yard when the train was entering Shoranur station from Palakkad side. The parcel van and the coach adjacent to the engine derailed. The electric posts near the rail line suffered damage.

However, no casualities were reported, said the officials of Palakkad Railway Division here.

Train services in the Thrissur-Shornur stretch were hit for nearly three hours. The rail traffic was partially restored at about 9AM and completely restored by 4 PM. Due to the derailment, three trains were cancelled and five trains partially cancelled.
