Tips to keep your asthma under control

There are 300 million people worldwide with asthma, including many top athletes. Worldwide, approximately 250,000 people die each year from this disease. According to the website, in India, 3-38% of children and approximately 2-12% of adults are affected by the disease, with an estimated national burden of approximately 18 million.

Although there is no cure for asthma, those with the condition can live healthy, active lives if and only if their asthma is under control. Asthma varies from region to region due to different genetic, environmental and occupational risk factors. Asthma is a common chronic lung disease that can make breathing difficult.

Effective asthma treatment requires routine tracking of symptoms of lung function. Playing an active role in managing asthma treatment will help you prevent asthma attacks and avoid long-term problems. Here are some useful tips for asthma patients to control their asthma.

  1. Understand your weaknesses

Weaknesses such as allergens and irritants can harm your respiratory tract and worsen your asthma symptoms. The best way to control asthma is to understand the cause and how to avoid them.

  1. Take asthma medication as directed by your doctor

Many people think that when they don’t feel any symptoms of asthma, they skip asthma medication, which is not right. Asthma is a chronic (long-term) disease. If you have asthma, you will always develop asthma even without any symptoms. You must control asthma every day, not just the days when you feel the symptoms.

  1. Learn how to use the inhaler correctly

Your healthcare provider can show you how to use the inhaler properly to get your medication to the respiratory tract. Ask him or her to pay attention to you when you are using the inhaler. Get advice from your health care provider to improve the use of technology so that the medication gets to your airways.

  1. Quit smoking, avoid secondhand smoke

If you smoke and have asthma, you should quit because it can significantly reduce the severity and frequency of symptoms. Smoking also reduces the effectiveness of asthma medications.

  1. Stay healthy through exercise

Exercise can strengthen your breathing muscles, strengthen your immune system and help maintain a healthy weight.

  1. Asthma Action Plan

Symptoms of asthma are diverse so depending on many things, they may get worse or better – you need to know how to adjust the medication based on symptoms and when to seek medical care. Work with your healthcare provider to create a personalized asthma action plan.

  1. Be safe from getting viral

Viruses such as colds and flu can infect people’s respiratory tract and lungs. The viral infection is a common cause of asthma symptoms. If you avoid getting a virus, asthma symptoms will decrease. Here are some ways to avoid viruses:

  • Wash your hands properly and often.
  • Inject the flu vaccine.
  • Ask your health care provider if you should get pneumonia.
  • Get proper sleep. If you rest well, you are less likely to have viral symptoms.

If you have a viral infection such as a cold or flu, be aware of the symptoms. If your symptoms worsen, follow the instructions in the Asthma Action Plan.
