Truecaller has released a report on the eve of International Women’s Day 2019. This report was envisioned by Truecaller and White Balance, an international film production collective. It shows 9 brave women discussing their cases of harassment.
Key stats from the report:
- 1 out of 3 women in India receive sexual and inappropriate calls or SMS
- At least once a week, 52% of women who received harassment calls gets inappropriate and sexual content, and 47% received unsolicited videos and pictures with inappropriate and sexual content.
- On average, 74% of these calls and texts were anonymous, 23% were made by stalkers, and 11% were from a person known to them.
- In particular, 28% of women in Delhi reported receiving calls and texts with offensive and sexual imagery or videos on a weekly basis, making it the highest in India.
- 8 in 10 women felt irritated or angry with these kind of harassment calls
- Almost 40% per cent of them felt troubled, worried or fearful
- In the report we also found out that close to three-fourths (74%) of the women has taken measures against these calls.
- The most common way to tackle this problem was to block the harasser’s number (92%), search for the number online (62%.) or request for DND activation (55%). 38% of women filed a complaint to the police or named and shamed the spammer on social media (16%).
- More than 60% women feel that these calls are made by unknown strangers
