Aadhar registrations have risen at an unprecedented level. It is estimated that UIDAI, the organisation issuing Aadhar cards, has issued a total of 125 crore cards to India’s people as of December 2019.

Union Minister of Parliament Hansraj Ahir said in January, “The UIDAI has issued a total of 122.90 crore Aadhaar cards as on November 30, 2018, he said, adding that 6.71 crore cards were issued to children below five years of age and 29.02 crore cards were given to people in the age group of 5 to 18 years.”

Hansraj Ahir gave the reply as an answer posed to him on Rajya Sabha in January.

According to the latest data available on the Sample Registration System (SRS), the birth rate for 2016 is 20.4 and the death rate is 6.4, he said.

The SRS is carried out on a continuous basis in randomly selected villages and urban blocks throughout the country.

While UIDAI’s expansive reach of providing Aadhar to more people is progressing faster. But Aadar has had its fair share of criticism. A patch freely available for as little as Rs 2,500 (around $35) allows unauthorised persons, based anywhere in the world, to generate Aadhaar numbers at will, and is still in widespread use.
