UK: Government petition website crashes after over 600K call to stay in EU

London: The UK government’s website for petitions crashed on Thursday morning after over 600K signed plea to for article 50 to be revoked.

The petition which was launched on Wednesday evening soon after Prime Minister Theresa May criticised MPs for not approving the Brexit deal. In less than a day, the petition garnered 600,000 signatures and was growing at a rate of 1500 a minute before the website crashed.

Article 50 is the legal mechanism by which countries in the EU can formally exit the Union.


A House of Commons spokesperson was quoted as saying by Mashable that the website was experiencing difficulties due to a high volume of traffic. “The petitions site is experiencing technical difficulties and we are working to get it running again urgently. It has been caused by a large and sustained load on the system.”
