UP: On his 73rd birthday, businessman pays bail amount of 17 inmates

A UP based businessmen celebrated his 73rd birthday by paying bail money of 17 inmates. Businessman Motilal Yadav deposited Rs 32,380 with the district jail authorities to grant freedom to prisoners who were booked for petty offenses and couldn’t afford bail.

Yadav’s kind gesture was appreciated by Superintendent of district jail and he said that around 232 inmates were released in the last two years after their families and friends deposited bail amount of Rs 8.5 lakhs.

The superintendent added there was a convict in the jail who was arrested on August 17, 2016, but his term had ended a year ago. As he was only able to pay Rs 1,089 as a penalty, he was forced to stay in jail for more than a year.

After reading a news story of a businessman who donated steel glass to jail inmates, Yadav decided to pay the bail money.

The businessman told a news agency “My son is an advocate. I have come to know that inmates can be released with people’s support. I have given my contribution. They will not repeat their mistakes in the future.”

Apart from the bail money, Yadav also paid for food and fare of around 8 inmates who were from other districts.

“Earlier too, I used to organize such things for needy people on my birthday. I also organized a ‘Bhandara’ for visually impaired students of ‘Soorkuti’ in the past but this time I got the idea to do something for hapless jail inmates,” Yadav told a newspaper.
