Senior Samajwadi Party leader & Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Azam Khan on Thursday, July 25 embroiled into a controversy in the Lower House for his remarks on BJP MP Rama Devi who was filling in for Speaker Om Birla.

While addressing the chair, Khan said to Rama Devi, “Aap mujhe itni acchi lagti hain ki mera mann karta hai ki aap ki aankhon mein aankhein dale rahoon.(I like you so much that I wish to keep looking in your eyes).”

The incident took place while the MP was speaking during a debate on Triple Talaq Bill. Following the remarks, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members, ministers sought an apology from Mr Khan. The Rampur MP responded saying, she was like her sister.

Rama Devi ordered to expunge the remarks from the Parliamentary records. “This is not the way to speak, please expunge these remarks,” the parliamentarian said.

Birla after returning to the chair said, all should speak keeping the dignity of the Parliament in mind. He asked Khan to tender an apology. However, Khan refused to apologise and said he was ready to tender his resignation if his language was unparliamentary. He later left the Lok Sabha after the uproar by BJP leaders.
