Bulandshahr: A 25-year-old man in Bulandshahr on Thursday allegedly cut off his own finger for accidentally voting for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) instead of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

BSP supporter Pawan Kumar, resident of Abdullapur Hulasan village, Shikarpur area, had gone to vote for SP-BSP-RLD alliance candidate Yogesh Verma but he mistakenly voted for the Bharatiya Janata Party.

“I accidentally pressed the button having Lotus symbol instead of an elephant. I chopped my finger for the mistake,” Kumar told a news agency.

A viral video shows the man sitting on a chair with his index finger wrapped in a bandage. When asked if he was forced to press on the BJP button, he said he wasn’t.

Frustrated for the mistake, Pawan returned home and cut off his finger with a chopper.

Incumbent MP Bhola Singh was the saffron party’s candidate in Bulandshahr.

The second phase of polling in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on Thursday, April 18, concluded with an estimated voter turnout of 67.55%. In Uttar Pradesh, the estimates stood at 62.06% for the eight constituencies which went for voting in this phase. Apart from Bulandshahr, voting was held in Aligarh, Hathras, Fatehpur Sikri, Nagina, Amroha, Mathura and Agra.
