Vande Bharat Express vs. Vande Metro

Vande Bharat Express vs. Vande Metro: As a result of the introduction of Vande Bharat Express trains, travel times have been reduced and journeys have become smoother across the country.

The addition of these semi-high-speed trains has changed rail travel in India.

These trains have become a game-changer for Indian Railways, connecting major cities in half the time.

There are currently over 82 Vande Bharat Express trains operating, with plans for many more in the pipeline. Indian Railways plans to introduce a new category of trains called Vande Metro based on the success of Vande Bharat Express.

About Vande Metro

Providing a rapid, shuttle-like experience at an affordable price, Vande Metro is a short-distance variant of Vande Bharat Express trains.

The network will connect 124 cities within a distance of approximately 100-250 kilometers, facilitating both inter-city and intra-city travel.

Delhi to Rewari, Agra to Mathura, Lucknow to Kanpur, Bhubhaneshwar to Balsore, and Tirupati to Chennai are some of the major routes.

The Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala, Punjab, is currently developing the prototype for Vande Metro. Trials are scheduled to begin in July 2024 and a launch is scheduled for 2025.

Although both train categories aim to reduce travel time, they cater to different needs.

The difference between Vande Bharat Express and Vande Metro

The Vande Metro trains connect major cities within a short distance, primarily for students and job seekers, while the Vande Bharat Express trains cover longer distances.

  • Train frequency: Vande Metro trains will run four or five times a day between cities.
  • In general, Vande Bharat Express trains operate once or twice a day and are designed for longer journeys.
  • Both trains have a minimum of 12 coaches and a maximum of 16, but their coach configurations differ.
  • As per multiple media reports, Vande Metro trains will have seating for 100 passengers and standing room for 180, while Vande Bharat Express trains offer comfortable seating for all passengers.
  • Vande Metro trains reach speeds of 130 kilometers per hour. Vande Bharat Express trains reach speeds of 183 kilometers per hour.
