Various MPs seek change in day for Private Members business

New Delhi, Nov 29 (IANS) Various Lok Sabha members, cutting across party lines, on Friday requested Speaker Om Birla to shift the day for Private Members’ business to Wednesday from Friday.

The suggestion was initiated by Biju Janata Dal leader Bhartruhari Mahtab when Birla sought members’ assent to start the Friday’s Private Members business a little late and instead take on Zero Hour, during which MPs raise issues of importance.

Mahtab said the Private Members business should be shifted from Friday to Wednesday like Britain as the time fixed for the session clashed many times with other business of the House.

His proposal was supported by Revolutionary Socialist Party’s N.K. Premchandran, Janata Dal-United’s Rajiv Ranjan and Trinamool Congress floor leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay.

A Member of Parliament who is not a Minister or not a member of the government is regarded as a Private Member. A Bill introduced in either house of Parliament by any such Member of Parliament is called a Private Member’s Bill.
