Virendra Sehwag 42nd Birthday: The Sultan-Multan of India who scored 85,86 runs in 104 Tests

Former India opener Virender Sehwag will blow 42nd birthday candles on October 20. Sehwag, one of the most aggressive batsmen during his playing days, was a nightmare for bowlers. The two-time World Cup winner played 104 Tests and 251 ODIs amassing 8586 and 8273 runs respectively. He recorded two triple centuries in Tests with a highest of 319 against South Africa in 2008.

In a career that spanned 14 years, Sehwag scored 8586 runs in 104 Tests at an average of 49.34 with 23 hundreds and 32 half-centuries. In 251 ODIs, he amassed 8273 runs at 35.05 with 15 centuries and 38 fifties while in 19 T20 internationals he made 394 runs with two fifties.

Sehwag made his ODI debut against Pakistan in 1999 at Mohali and his Test debut in 2001 against South Africa at Bloemfontein. He also captained India in the country’s first-ever T20I, when they took on South Africa in 2006.

On March 29 in 2004, Sehwag became the first Indian batsman to breach the 300-run mark when he hammered the Pakistan bowlers in their den in Multan. Sehwag’s knock helped him earn the nickname of ‘Sultan of Multan’ as India won the match by an innings and 52 runs.

One of his most underrated knocks even though he hit a double ton and was the difference between the two sides in one of India’s famous victories on foreign soil. And this Lankan team comprised of some of their all-time greats including the legend Muttiah Muralitharan but none of this mattered to Viru as he carried his bat through the Indian innings while only two other batsmen reached double-digit scores.

After his retirement in 2015, Sehwag has continued to slam hundreds off the pitch and remains an entertainer on social media.
