Water levels in reservoirs supplying water to Chennai rise

Chennai, Nov 16 (IANS) Water levels in various reservoirs catering to Chennai’s needs are rising owing to regular rains in the catchment areas.

The weather department has predicted heavy rain to occur at isolated places over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Cuddalore,Thoothukudi, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts of Tamil Nadu.

According to Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, popularly known as Metro Water the total storage as on Monday in the four reservoirs stands at 6,706 million cubic feet (Mcft) as against the storage levels of 3,148 Mcft previous year same day.

Metro Water officials are of the view that the water level is comfortable and can meet the city’s demands till next summer.

The four reservoirs that quench Chennai’s thirst are Poondi (storage on Nov 16 1,416 Mcft), Cholavaram (142 Mcft), Redhills (2,367 Mcft) and Chembarambakkam (2,781 Mcft).

The cumulative full capacity of the four reservoirs is 11,257 Mcft.
