CBD Oil has medicinal properties and is used for its pain-relieving effects, reducing anxiety and depression. The term ‘cannabidiol’ or ‘CBD’ has been doing the rounds on the Internet for some time now, perhaps, for different reasons.
On Tuesday, Sutapa Sikdar, the wife of late actor Irrfan Khan appealed for legalisation of CBD oil in India because she shared a photograph of a London hospital where her husband received cancer treatment on her unverified Instagram account. Studies have shown that CBD oil can provide some health benefits, including relief of chronic pain and anxiety symptoms.
After fighting cancer for about two years, Irrfan Khan passed away on April 20, 2020. In March 2018, he was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumor, a rare type of that arises from cells throughout the diffuse endocrine system of the human body. The Angrezi Medium actor died in a Mumbai hospital where he underwent treatment for colon infection.
“London revisit looking at his hospital room from outside like everytime I did while he was there #walkingalone #wishyouwerethere #cancerpain #LegalizeCBDoilinindia,” Sutapa captioned while sharing the photo of the London hospital she visited.
Meanwhile, actress Rhea Chakraborty, who is currently in Byculla jail after being arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), had been accused of managing CBD oil to late boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput.
What is CBD oil?
Now, cannabidiol is a popular natural medicine used for many common health problems. It is one of more than 100 compounds called cannabinoids found in cannabis or marijuana plants Cannabis sativa. Basically, CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant and then diluting it with a carrier oil such as hemp seed oil or coconut oil.
It is important to understand that CBD is a completely different compound from etrahydrocannabinol (THC), the most active constituent cannabinoid found in cannabis. THC has a psychological effect because it creates the sensation of getting ‘high’, but, CBD is not psychoactive.
Benefits and uses of CBD oil:
CBD oil is being used for thousands of years as a natural remedy for different types of pain, and several studies have shown that the compound can help treat many diseases.
Here are some health benefits of CBD oil backed by science:
Cancer: CBD can help relieve symptoms associated with cancer and chemotherapy side effects, such as pain, nausea, and vomiting. Research also shows that CBD may have cancer-fighting properties. However, more work is needed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of CBD oil in cancer treatment.
Neurological disorders: One of the most researched uses of CBD is to treat and manage neurological disorders such as epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. Many studies have shown encouraging results. For example, Sativex, an oral spray composed of CBD and THC, has been shown to be effective in reducing muscle spasticity in patients with multiple sclerosis. Another study reported that CBD oil can reduce seizures in patients with epilepsy.
It can be noted that the FDA has approved a purified form of CBD under the brand name Epidiolex for the treatment of certain types of epilepsy. The potential efficacy of CBD in the treatment of several other neurological diseases is also being studied.
Heart health: Studies have shown that CBD can promote heart health in many ways, such as lowering blood pressure and preventing heart damage. Several studies conducted on animals have also shown that CBD has powerful antioxidant and stress-reducing properties, which can reduce inflammation and cell damage related to heart disease.
Anxiety and depression: In human and animal studies, CBD oil has shown encouraging results in reducing anxiety and depression. CBD is also used to treat insomnia and anxiety in children with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Diabetes: Researchers have found evidence that CBD can prevent or delay the onset of type 1 diabetes, a disease that occurs when the immune system attacks cells in the pancreas to cause inflammation. Studies have also shown that CBD may have neuroprotective effects on diabetic rats.
Side effects of CBD oil in some people, check here
CBD is generally well-tolerated in most cases, but, it can cause adverse reactions in some people. Side effects observed in studies are:
- Changes in appetite
- Weight gain or weight loss
- Irritability and irritation
CBD can also interfere with certain supplements or medications, especially those that warn against consuming grapefruit. Both CBD and grapefruit interfere with a group of enzymes, called cytochromes P450 (CYPs). This damage affects the ability of the liver to break down toxins, which can lead to liver damage.
Most importantly, more research is needed to determine the safety and effectiveness of CBD oil in the human body, although many studies have shown that CBD oil may be helpful in managing a range of diseases.
Thus, anyone who is considering using CBD oil must consult a doctor first.
