Father’s Day in Us: In the United States, Father’s Day falls on the third Sunday of June each year, though the specific date may vary by country.

On Sunday, 16 June, Father’s Day will be observed this year.

The origins of Father’s Day in the United States

Father’s Day’s origins vary across countries, with Catholic tradition being the most common.

Nevertheless, Father’s Day in the United States has a unique history that dates back to June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. Sonora Smart Dodd organized the first-ever Father’s Day celebration in this country.

In 1909, Dodd suggested that fathers also deserve a day to be recognized during a Mother’s Day sermon.

After Dodd’s mother passed away, her father, a Civil War veteran and single parent, raised her and her siblings, making her realize the value of recognizing fathers.

Due to her admiration for her father’s dedication and sacrifices, Dodd began campaigning for a Father’s Day.

To garner support, she approached local churches, government officials, and community organizations. She chose June as the month to honor her father’s birthday, which was on 5 June.

In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge expressed his desire to make Father’s Day a national holiday.

President Lyndon B. Johnson declared it to be celebrated on the third Sunday in June in 1966, after initially rejecting the idea.

A law was signed by President Richard Nixon in 1972 recognizing Father’s Day as a national holiday.

In 2010, as part of Spokane’s centennial celebration of Father’s Day, the Dodd family home was added to the Register of Historic Places.
