The Congress on Saturday, September 28, appointed Rohan Gupta as the chairperson of its social media department, a post which was earlier headed by Divya Spandana.
“Congress president has appointed Rohan Gupta as the new chairperson of the social media department with immediate effect,” an official communication from the party read.
Gupta who has been a coordinator in the media department of the party, is best known for leading the party’s IT cell for the Gujarat Assembly elections in 2017.
The polls turned out to be the grand old party’s best performance in the state in nearly two decades.
The party operated nearly 45,000 WhatsApp groups in Gujarat and a YouTube channel of ‘Pakka Gujarati’ under him. One of his ideas, “Vikas gando thayo chhe” (Development has gone crazy)’ – a cyber campaign launched to mock the government’s tall claims of development ahead of the 2017 winter went viral on social media platforms and gained national praise.

Last year, Gupta was part of the party’s efforts to professionalize its media management strategies by holding tests for people wanting to be spokespersons.
There will be high expectations from Gupta, as he comes to lead the social media unit at a time when the party is at its lowest in terms of electoral success. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls the grand old party was reduced to an embarrassing 52 Member of Parliaments (MP), while on the other hand the saffron party went on to cross an improbable 300 mark. The Congress has also struggled to keep its unit tight, as key leaders openly showed their discontent with the conduct on various occassions,
Following Spandana’s departure from the post, Gupta was seen as a frontrunner to be Congress social media chief.
