Will build a Britain where our children, grandchildren can light their Diyas: PM Sunak

Extending Diwali greetings to all, Britain’s newly-appointed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has vowed to do everything possible to create a Britain where children and grandchildren can light their Diyas and look forward with optimism.

Sunak, 42, was at a Diwali reception at 10 Downing Street in London on Wednesday night, a day after becoming Britain’s first Prime Minister of Indian origin.

“Excellent to attend tonight’s Diwali reception in No10.” “I will do everything in this job I can to build a Britain where our children and grandchildren can light their Diyas and look to the future with hope,” he said in a tweet accompanied by a photo of himself attending a Diwali reception at his official residence.

Sunak, Britain’s first Indian-origin Prime Minister, took office on Tuesday, promising to correct the “mistakes” made by his predecessor Liz Truss, which left a black hole in government finances and the markets in turmoil. He was sworn in as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace.

Sunak unveiled his top team on Tuesday, naming key Cabinet members and deciding to keep the new Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, in place for economic stability, as well as bringing back Indian-origin Suella Braverman as Home Secretary.

He has promised to govern with “integrity,” and he has attempted to unite the Conservatives by including members of the party’s various wings in his top team.

Sunak stated from 10 Downing Street that he was elected to correct the mistakes of his predecessor.

“I’d like to pay tribute to Liz Truss, my predecessor. She wasn’t wrong to want to boost the country’s growth. It’s a noble goal, and I admire her determination to effect change, but some mistakes were made, not out of malice, but mistakes nonetheless,” he said.

He stated that he will earn the trust of Britons and that his government will be characterised by integrity, professionalism, and accountability at all levels.

“I stand before you ready to lead our country into the future, to prioritise your needs over politics, to reach out and build a government that embodies the best traditions of my party.” “We can accomplish incredible things together,” he said.

Sunak, a former investment banker turned politician, is the youngest Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 210 years. He is also the United Kingdom’s first Hindu Prime Minister.

Sunak’s victory in the Conservative leadership election came at the end of a tumultuous few days in Westminster, following Truss’ resignation last Thursday in the aftermath of a disastrous tax-cutting mini-budget and several policy U-turns.
