Thiruvananthapuram: In a touch and go kind of a situation, and only if all right cards fall into right places, Kerala may soon get its first woman state police chief.

R. Sreelekha might makes it to the Director General of Police post in the state.

Sreelekha already holds the record of being the first woman IPS officer in Kerala Cadre when she in January 1987 at the age of 26, she joined the state police service.

In June, she already created another record, when she was promoted from the post of Additional Director General of Police to the rank of Director General of Police as the head of the Fire and Rescue Services department. She, thus became the first woman officer in the state to get the coveted top rank in the police.

Already a DGP rank officer, Sreelekha now is in a race against time as she superannuates on the Christmas day this year.

Incumbent — Loknath Behra — stands between Sreelekha and her next record as Behra has completed four years, but he superannuates in June 2021.

Behra one of the senior-most police officers in the country is said to be looking forward to his career at the national level. Speculations are ripe that Behra, known for his closeness to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, might be considered for two ‘key’ posts in the state.
