Every year, May 8 is committed to World Thalassemia Day. The day honours and encourages Thalassemia victims those who struggle to live with the disease. Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that is characterised by less hemoglobin and lesser than normal blood cells. A person suffering from thalassemia has at least one of the parents as a carrier of the disease.

On World Thalassemia Day people comes together to know about all the preventive measures, cure and also to avoid it’s spread from one person to another. There is almost 19 percent of the people who are the Thalassemia carrier in the Country of Saudi Arabia. World Thalassemia Day makes the people come across every idea and plans to remove and cure the Thalassemia Disease of the World.

Thalassemia is a Hereditary Disease that cannot be prevented, but it can be decreased by making the parent’s tests which makes the Doctors get the Disease cure or prevent it from spreading to the Child. It is very necessary to visit the Doctors to get every possible treatment to prevent their Child before Birth of the Child takes place and also before getting their child to inherit the genes from the Parents to their Child. So the people need to check the Thalassemia Disease for its cure or prevention before they get inherent to their Childs from them.

Facts about Thalassemia:

Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that causes your body to have less hemoglobin than normal. Hemoglobin enables red blood cells to carry oxygen.

  • Thalassemia can cause anemia, leaving you fatigued.
  • Mild thalassemia may not need treatment.
  • More severe forms may require regular blood transfusions.
  • You can take steps to cope with fatigue, such as choosing a healthy diet and exercising regularly.​

Foods to be avoided by Thalassemia patient:

  1. Watermelon falls under the list of foods to be avoided if suffering from thalassemia. This fruit is high in vitamin C and also contains iron which does not go well for thalassemia patients.
  2. Dates are rich in iron and only recommended for people with low hemoglobin count. Therefore, this dry fruit should strictly be avoided by thalassemia patients.
  3. Green leafy vegetables though healthy, but for thalassemia patients, they are not ideal. Spinach, kale, and broccoli should not be included in the list of meals for people suffering from this blood disorder disease.
  4. Red meats like beef, mutton liver are a strict no for thalassemia patients as they are high in iron content.
  5. Pulses like chickpeas, black-eyed peas, pigeon peas to name a few also contain a decent amount of iron, hence they should be avoided by thalassemia patients.

Health activities related to thalassemia in India:

  • Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakrama (RBSK) under National Health Mission provides early detection and treatment of children suffering from genetic disorders include thalassemia.
  • Facilities for medical checkups before marriage are available at various government health centres.
  • Patients suffering from thalassemia, (hemophilia or sickle cell anemia) are provided blood free of cost as directed by the national blood transfusion council under the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO).
  • Disability due to thalassemia is included in “The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill – 2016″ by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India.
  • Several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) like ‘Thalassemics India’ are working to help deal with Thalassaemia in India by launching projects like “Helping Hands”.
