As the year 2019 draws to a close, here is a recap of the major judgments announced by the Supreme Court of India

The Supreme Court of India in year 2019 delivered some landmark verdicts. Many of these cases were delivered by the then Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi’s tenure. Justice Gogoi retired on November 17. But before he vacated the office of the CJI, he had delivered major judgments.

As the year draws to a close, here is a recap of the major judgments

Ayodhya Land Dispute Case – 

On November 9, regarding a unanimous verdict, the SC had cleared the decks for construction of the Ram temple at the squabble ite in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.

Saravana Bhavan’s founder held guilty in murder case – 

The Supreme Court upheld the life sentence awarded to P Rajagopal – the founder of famous South Indian restaurant chain Saravana Bhavan – and five of his aides for murder of Santhakumar in 2001. The bench of Justices N V Ramana, Mohan M Shantanagoudar and Indira Banerjee dismissed the batch of appeals filed by accused against the 2009 judgment of Madras High Court.

Contempt case against Rahul Gandhi – 

The top court pronounced its verdict in the criminal contempt case against Rahul Gandhi for wrongfully attributing the ‘Chowkidaar chor hai’ jibe to the court. While the court ended the proceedings against Gandhi, it asked the Congress leader to be more careful in future.

Sabaramala Review Petition – 

The top court on November 14 had referred to a larger constitution bench a batch of review petitions against its September 2018 verdict. While reading out the verdict, the then CJI Gogi has said, “The entry of women into places of worship is not limited to this temple only. It is also involved in the entry of women into mosques.”

Rafale Review Plea – 

On November 14, all petitions that were looking for a review of its 2018 judgement had been dismissed by SC giving a clean chit to the Narendra Modi government in the Rafale fighter jet deal with French firm Dassault Aviation.
