Buffaloes Seized In Bhopal: The Bhopal Municipal Corporation is spending a large amount of money to look after 49 buffaloes that were seized by Itkhedi police in January 2026. The buffaloes were stopped while they were allegedly being taken illegally to Rajasthan in a truck. Police seized the animals and sent them to the Municipal Corporation’s Arwalia Kanjighar. Since then, the civic body has been paying for their food, care and treatment.
The fodder bill alone has crossed ₹16 lakh in around 10 months. The animals still remain at the shelter because the legal case over their ownership and transportation hasn’t been settled.

Itkhedi police station in-charge Ashish Sapre said police had stopped the truck in January and found around 49 buffaloes inside it. The animals were allegedly being transported to Rajasthan without proper permission.
Police took action under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The truck was seized and the buffaloes were moved to the municipal Kanjighar in Arwalia.
The Municipal Corporation’s Govardhan Project keeps records of the money spent on the animals every month. During the 10 months, nine of the 49 buffaloes have died. Four others have given birth to calves at the shelter.
Even when an animal dies, the municipal staff can’t simply dispose of it on their own. The Govardhan Project has to first inform Itkhedi police. A post-mortem can then be carried out after police permission.
As the cost of keeping the buffaloes continued to increase, the Municipal Corporation prepared a proposal to auction them. It also contacted Itkhedi police and asked for permission.
The auction couldn’t go ahead because the legal case is still pending in court.
Berasia tehsil Assistant District Prosecution Officer Shailendra Singh Sisodia said the lower court had asked for documents showing who owned the buffaloes. HThe concerned party couldn’t provide proper ownership papers. The matter was later taken to the High Court. The High Court didn’t hear it because the case was already being considered by the lower court.

The Municipal Corporation is now looking at another option. Its Govardhan Project unit is preparing to ask officials for permission to write to Itkhedi police and return the buffaloes.
The civic body also wants to recover the money it has already spent on fodder. But Ashish Sapre said the police can’t pay these expenses. According to him, the police are responsible for taking legal action in the case, while the Municipal Corporation is responsible for taking care of stray cattle and buffaloes.
