54 Army personnel died in plane accidents in 4 years

Fifty-four persons were died in accidents involving military aircraft including fighter planes since last four years, the government said today. Of which, 33 casualties were reported in 2016-17.

In response to a question in Lok Sabha, Subhash Bhamre, Minister of State in the Defence Ministry, said  617 complaints were registered against army officers in 2015 and 594 in 2016.

“The complaints are inquired into as per laid down provisions and guidelines on the subject and if any delinquency is established, appropriate action is initiated under the Army Act. Cases, where independent investigation is required are referred to the CBI,” Bhamre said.

The minister further said that during 2015 and 2016, two serving defence personnel, six retired defence personnel and two others have been arrested for their alleged involvement in spying activities.
