5400 Payment: According to reports, Nationwide Vision agreed to a $3.45 million settlement after a data breach revealed the personal information of over 710,000 people. The breach, which occurred between April and May of 2021, affected Sightcare, Nationwide Vision Center, Nationwide Optometry, and their patients, employees, and dependents.

The settlement resolves the class action lawsuit against the company, even though they deny any wrongdoing.

According to Marca, the lawsuit claims that the breach happened because Nationwide Vision and Sightcare failed to implement proper cybersecurity measures. As part of the settlement, eligible individuals may get reimbursement for losses caused by the breach or receive a cash payment. Although the exact amount will depend on the total number of claims submitted and the court’s approval, the expected payout per person is approximately $50.

Up to $300 can be reimbursed for common expenses, with an additional $100 available for lost time. Those who experienced greater losses might be eligible for up to $5,400. Additionally, all claimants will get free credit and identity theft monitoring for two years.

Class action lawsuits allow a group of people to take legal action against a company for widespread harm. To avoid lengthy and costly legal battles, companies often settle these cases without admitting any fault.

The final approval hearing for this settlement is scheduled for October 15, 2024. Affected individuals need to submit their claims by September 23, 2024.
