Immigrants Social Security: According to a recent report, undocumented immigrants contributed around $26 billion to Social Security in a single year.

Undocumented residents paid $6 billion into Medicare and £25.7 billion into Social Security in 2022, according to a new analysis by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP). These are two programs that they are not eligible to access. In 2022, taxes paid by unauthorized immigrants totaled $96.7 billion, or about $9,000 per individual.

In 2022, taxes paid by individuals without legal status were $96.7 billion, of which $59.4 billion went to the federal government and the remainder $37.3 billion was given to state and local governments. Undocumented immigrants were shown to pay higher state and local tax rates in forty states compared to the wealthiest one percent of households in those areas.

Stimulus Payment August 2024: What government payments are being given?

“Income tax payments by undocumented immigrants are affected by laws that require them to pay more than otherwise similarly situated U.S. citizens,” according to the research. “Undocumented immigrants are often barred from receiving meaningful tax credits and sometimes do not claim refunds they are owed due to lack of awareness, concern about their immigration status, or insufficient access to tax preparation assistance.”

Government reserve funds and payroll taxes are used to pay for Social Security. According to News Week, at $1.3 trillion, or around 5% of the US GDP in 2023, it is by far the biggest direct expense of the government’s yearly budget. Employees contribute to the fund, regardless of nationality, at a rate of 12.4%, which is split evenly between the worker and their employer.

Experts and research groups have discovered that illegal immigration helps the Social Security system by increasing the amount of money available to pay it from workers who are not qualified to receive survivor, disability, or retirement benefits.

“For the straightforward reason that many illegal immigrants continue to pay taxes into the system even though they are typically unable to receive Social Security and Medicare benefits, illegal immigration helps the finances of Social Security and Medicare. As long as illegal immigrants are unable to get benefits, these taxes serve as gratuitous donations to the trust funds.”

Professor Shayak Sarkar of the University of California Davis School of Law told Newsweek that “people who are already in the country are making contributions to the Social Security Administration [SSA] even though they do not have work authorization, and people who do have work authorization are strangely prohibited from making contributions.”

“Some undocumented immigrant workers make Social Security contributions through payroll taxes deducted from their paychecks—even if they will never ultimately make a claim for Social Security.”
