8th Pay Commission Salary Revision: The Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the rules and work plan for the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC). This new pay commission will decide the next big salary and pension hike for government employees and pensioners.

The new pay and pension rates are expected to start from January 1, 2026, once the commission gives its report. The panel has 18 months to finish its work and share its findings with the government.

Who will get the Benefits?

This decision will help nearly 50 lakh central government employees and about 69 lakh pensioners all over India. Most state governments also follow the central pay commission, so this move may also bring higher salaries for state workers later. People are very hopeful because it has been almost 10 years since the 7th Pay Commission was implemented in 2016.

Reports say that the salary increase will depend on something called the fitment factor, which is used to calculate the new basic pay. The new fitment factor may be between 1.83 and 2.46 times the current salary. If the number is higher, the final pay and pension will also increase more. However, the government will decide the final numbers only after the commission completes its review.

Who will Lead the Commission ?

The 8th CPC will have a Chairperson, a Part-Time Member, and a Member-Secretary. The Chairperson will be Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, a retired judge of the Supreme Court. The panel may also give interim reports before the final one if needed.

The commission will study many important things. It will look at India’s current economic condition, the need to keep government spending under control, and the cost of non-contributory pensions. It will also check how the new pay structure might affect state budgets and how the pay of government employees compares with those in public sector companies and the private sector.

What Happens next?

After the report is complete and the Cabinet approves it, the new pay and pension rates will start from January 2026. This means employees will get more take-home pay, and retirees will receive higher pensions. Experts say the change will increase people’s income and help the economy because more people will have money to spend.
