8th Pay Commission: Government Finally Speaks On Implementation, Here’s what they said

8th Pay Commission Update: The Finance Ministry has finally opened up about the delay in setting up the 8th Pay Commission. The government said that the members and the chairperson of the commission will be appointed after it officially notifies the panel. But this notification has still not happened because the finance ministry is still working on finalising the Terms of Reference (ToR).

This ToR will be the main framework that helps in deciding the changes in salaries and pensions for more than one crore central government employees and pensioners.

During a session in the Lok Sabha, some members of Parliament raised questions about the delay. T R Balu and Anand Bhadauria asked whether the commission had been notified since it was announced in January 2026. Minister of State in the Finance Ministry, Pankaj Chaudhary, responded to these questions.

According to FE, He said, “It has been decided by the government to constitute the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC). Inputs have been sought from major stakeholders, including Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Personnel & Training and from states.”

He also added that the government would appoint the chairperson and members only after the commission is notified. When the members asked about when this will happen, the minister said that the government would look into appointing the members and the chairperson once the panel is officially set up. He also said that the implementation of the recommendations will happen only after the commission makes suggestions and the government accepts them.

8th Pay Commission Update: Why there is still No Notification?

The government had announced the 8th Pay Commission in early 2026, but even after six months, the panel hasn’t been formed. The finance ministry has not yet released the notification, and this delay might be due to administrative reasons or some internal steps that are still pending.

It is believed that the government might appoint the members and the chairperson by the end of 2025. The Terms of Reference are also expected to include things like a fresh look at minimum wages, changes in pension rules, and new rules for dearness allowance.

Government Employees are Waiting

Government employees and pensioners are getting restless because their salaries and pensions haven’t been revised for a long time. Prices of things are going up, and many workers are finding it difficult to manage with their current pay. They believe that the 8th Pay Commission will not only raise their salaries but also bring better pension rules, better allowances, and updated minimum wages.

Normally a new pay commission is set up every 10 years. The 7th Pay Commission had come into effect from January 2016, so employees were expecting the next one to be appointed around 2024 or 2025, so that new salary rules could begin from 2026.

Even though the announcement of the 8th Pay Commission was made, the actual process of starting it has not happened yet. Many workers are worried because the rising prices and no raise in income have reduced their ability to manage their daily expenses.
