After Iraq, Afghanistan, India witnessed highest terror attacks: Report

A latest data compiled by the US State Department has pointed out that India has witnessed the third highest number of terrorist attacks in 2016. The country has witnessed terror attack even more than Pakistan, which has slipped to the fourth spot.

While Iraq, with 2,965 terrorist attacks ranked first in the list, Afghanistan with 1,340 terrorist attacks was at second, followed by India. India saw 927 attacks while Pakistan at 734 attacks was at the fourth position in the list.

Over half of the terrorist attacks in India in 2016 took place in four states including Jammu and Kashmir at 19%, Chhattisgarh at 18%, Manipur at 12%, and Jharkhand at 10%, said the department in its Country Report on Terrorism.

The annual report also highlighted that the number of terrorist attacks has increased by 16%. Besides, the number of deaths has increased by 17% in India in 2016.

Even though India ranked third among nations that witnessed most terror attacks, the lethality of these attacks remained relatively low compared to other nations. The attacks in India led to 0.4 deaths per attack compared to 2.4 deaths per attack globally.

The deadliest attack in India in 2016 happened in July. It took place as the Communist Party of India, Maoist sparked off explosives and opened fire on Central Reserve Police Force personnel in Bihar. Sixteen people were killed, including six assailants in the attack.
