American Squid Game update: Netflix is getting ready to grow the world of Squid Game again, but this time the story will travel far from Korea. The streaming giant has started work on a new English-language American spin-off that will sit inside the same universe as the hit Korean show.

Filming Starts in 2026 for the American Version

New reports say the answer is yes. Collider shared that a listing on the Film and Television Industry Alliance website shows filming will begin on February 26, 2026. The shoot will take place mostly in Los Angeles and other parts of California.

Writers made it clear that the spin-off will not copy the old plot. Instead, it will be a fresh story that lives inside the same universe. That means new faces, new struggles and a new look at how people act when they are pushed to their limits.

One big name connected to the project is David Fincher, known for Fight Club, Gone Girl and Mindhunter. He has not said anything himself, but Collider wrote that he is expected to direct the series. He will work with Hwang Dong-hyuk, the original creator of Squid Game. Hwang will help shape the project so it still feels like part of the main franchise.

New Cast and New Story

The show will not bring back the actors from the Korean story. Instead, it will create a brand-new cast from the start. One surprising link remains as we see Actress Cate Blanchett, who appeared at the end of Squid Game Season 3, will return.

Cate Blanchett will play the Western version of the mysterious recruiter who was played by Gong Yoo in the Korean show. Her character will act like a bridge that connects the older series to the new American version.

The Seduction Episode 2: Exact Release Time and Where to Watch

Fans reacted in different ways when they heard the updates. Some people felt excited that Squid Game is growing. Others worried the English version may lose the strong feelings and cultural power that made the first series so famous. On social media, viewers shared mixed comments. One person asked when the first season would release, while another wrote that the “American version might surpass the original,” which started many debates online.

Release Time

Reports say it will run next to the original storyline, so it will show the same themes but with new characters and a very different world around them. A report from News18 says Netflix is planning a release around Christmas 2028, which matches how earlier Squid Game seasons came out close to the holiday season.
